This morning, our hill was exceptionally calm. The only notable event was a group of joggers passing by, which caused a certain feline’s tail to puff up dramatically.
As Tabs inspected his familiar patches of grass, foliage, and shrubs, I found myself reflecting on how territorial and envious he has become in his later years.
This possessiveness isn’t limited to his human companions—it extends to his outdoor territory. Last week, I might have found a Post-It note requesting that I contact the city to officially rename our hill “Mt. Saint Tabby.” The reason? Tabs cannot stand the idea of any other cat relaxing on what he considers his exclusive turf.

For Tabs, these early-morning rounds represent the ultimate “meow time.” During these walks, he doesn’t have to vie for my focus with El Hub, the baby, or even the TJ’s snack that might otherwise find its way to my lips. Outdoors, it’s only him and me—a duo facing the world together.
