ESPN reports that the ex-UFC women's bantamweight titleholder has reached an agreement with WWE, committing to perform as a full-time wrestler for the organization.
On Sunday, Rousey stunned the wrestling world by showing up at WWE's Royal Rumble event held in Philadelphia. As per ESPN, the ring was occupied by Asuka (winner of the Women's Royal Rumble Match), Charlotte Flair (SmackDown Women's Champion), and Alexa Bliss (Raw Women's Champion) when Joan Jett's track 'Bad Reputation' began playing over the loudspeakers, and Rousey's name appeared on the screen.
WWE states that Rousey subsequently stepped into the ring and gestured toward the WrestleMania banner suspended from the ceiling. The company adds that Rousey offered a handshake to Asuka, which was dismissed. The pair allegedly spoke briefly, after which Rousey again indicated the sign and bid farewell to the champions with a wave.
Following the unexpected appearance, ESPN's Ramona Shelburne interviewed Rousey.
“This is my life going forward. It's my top commitment for the coming years. This isn't a quick hit or a PR move,” Rousey explained to Shelburne about her WWE decision. “During my initial meeting with Triple H, I said, ‘I have other options that would pay significantly more, but I wouldn't have nearly as much fun.'”
“It's amusing—it's similar to acting, a pursuit I've always dreamed of but never believed would be possible for me,” Rousey shared with ESPN. “Now that I see this chance is real, I think my six-year-old self would be furious with me if I let it slip away.”
