The Little Moppet Heart Foundation, established by the physician duo Dr. Hema and Dr. Gopi, has been rescuing young hearts throughout Tamil Nadu for years.
In a world where compassion, generosity, and altruism are increasingly rare, newspapers are filled with tales of aggression, prejudice, and outright hostility. It is easy to become jaded, yet stories of individuals who invest their time, resources, and energy into improving the world remind us that humanity still holds promise. Dr. Hemapriya and her husband Dr. Gopi exemplify this — a married pair of doctors who abandoned well-paying medical professions to launch the Little Moppet Heart Foundation.
While regularly treating children with Congenital Heart Disease, they observed that numerous youngsters were denied essential medical care simply because their families could not afford the steep surgical costs. Dr. Hema and Dr. Gopi recognized they could not remain passive while hospitals turned away children due to financial constraints.
Current data indicates that Congenital Heart Disease (CHD) affects 2 out of every 100 children nationwide. Tens of thousands of these affected kids endure lives of hopelessness because their households cannot cover treatment expenses. When the doctor couple decided to resign from their positions and establish the foundation, they had a single objective: to deliver free medical care to every economically disadvantaged child suffering from CHD. Their vision was unambiguous — to achieve a CHD-free India.
Operating from Madurai, the organization began reaching out to underprivileged children in the city and its surroundings. Dr. Gopi, a Pediatric Cardiac Surgeon, and Dr. Hema, a physician who transitioned into an entrepreneur, personally organized complimentary health camps. The foundation’s process begins with diagnosing the children, arranging necessary surgeries, and continues with regular follow-up appointments and counseling sessions for anxious parents.
In an era where time translates to money and corporate hospitals often overcharge patients, LMHF emerges as a lifeline for children battling CHD. The foundation has steadily attracted greater visibility through awareness initiatives. Recently, CNN News 18 Channel broadcast a segment highlighting LMHF and the efforts of Dr. Hema and Dr. Gopi. The news clip can be viewed here.
In our culture, people frequently offer various forms of wealth to the Divine in search of blessings. Given that children are living embodiments and gifts from the Lord, wouldn’t it be more meaningful to extend something to them as well? Small donations from every individual can assist this doctor couple in realizing their aspiration of a CHD-free India. Dr. Hema and Dr. Gopi serve as living inspirations for all of us. May God bless them and support their mission to Save Little Hearts.
