Pizza is a beloved indulgence often packed with unhealthy fats, refined carbs, and high sodium. Yet at Don Peppe pizzeria, fortunate guests were treated to an extraordinary 'longevity' pizza.
The Pizza Pascalina was offered to enthusiastic attendees at the Napoli Pizza Village last June. This dish was developed based on findings from a study conducted by the Naples Fondazione Pascale Institute of Tumors.
The research brought together specialists from diverse fields, forming a robust network of chefs, customers, producers, and scientists. Their shared mission: protecting public health by 'promoting healthy dietary practices, including pizza consumption.'
This one-of-a-kind pizza served at Don Peppe may lower the likelihood of cardiovascular disease and certain digestive system malignancies, such as rectal cancer.
Components of the longevity-enhancing pizza
The longevity-enhancing pizza at Don Peppe was prepared using these 'ideal' ingredients:
- Caiazzo olives – Olives are packed with vitamin E and strong antioxidants. They support heart health and may aid in preventing cancer and osteoporosis. Additionally, olives supply calcium, copper, and iron.
- Cilento extra virgin olive oil – Olive oil contains monounsaturated oleic acid, a fatty acid offering numerous health benefits. Extra virgin olive oil is also rich in antioxidants with potent biological effects. It provides nutrients like oleic acid and the antioxidant oleocanthal, which can combat inflammation. Unlike many oils, olive oil is not associated with weight gain; in fact, it may even aid weight loss.
- Corbara or San Marzano tomatoes – Tomatoes are an excellent source of vitamin C and other antioxidants. Vitamin C and certain antioxidants can hinder the formation of free radicals that contribute to cancer. Tomatoes also contain choline, fiber, and potassium, which promote heart health.
- Chili pepper – Chilies can prevent stomach ulcers, and red hot chili peppers can eliminate bacteria. Chili peppers contain capsaicin, which kills bacteria such as Helicobacter pylori and helps manage inflammatory bowel diseases.
- Garlic – Low in calories, garlic is rich in manganese and vitamins B6 and C. It also contains additional nutrients. Garlic can fight infectious diseases, many of which are leading causes of death among the elderly or individuals with compromised immune systems.
- Raw friarielli campani broccoli – Raw broccoli consists of at least 90% water, 7% carbs, and 3% protein. This cruciferous vegetable contains almost no fat.
- Wheat flour – Whole grains provide nutrients that help reduce the risks of high blood pressure and heart attack.
Organizers of the Napoli Pizza Village stated that the Pizza Pascalina can be enjoyed at least twice weekly because it is made from ingredients with various health benefits.
The Pizza Pascalina was also featured in the Pascaliana Food Pyramid (Piramide Alimentare Pascaliana), which is based on the principles of a Mediterranean diet and the World Cancer Research Fund's cancer prevention guidelines. The food pyramid was also developed using data from the latest research on diets and cancer prevention.
Lucky patrons were able to sample the 'longevity' pizza at the Napoli Pizza Village pavilion of Don Peppe, one of 50 pizzerias that visited Naples last June.
