The 77th annual Golden Globe Awards, hosted by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, unfolded on January 6, 2020, at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles, with NBC broadcasting the gala live. British comedian Ricky Gervais returned for a fifth turn as master of ceremonies. Among the golden statuettes handed out that night was one for HBO's "Chernobyl," recognized as the year's finest television drama.

The show chronicles the catastrophic 1986 explosion at the Chernobyl nuclear facility in Ukraine, which took place on April 26 of that year. Swedish filmmaker Johan Renck helmed the project; his résumé includes directing episodes of "Breaking Bad," "The Walking Dead," and "Vikings." Craig Mazin served as producer, having previously worked on the "Scary Movie" franchise, "The Hangover," and other comedies. Both men had earned reputations for crafting sharp, hard-hitting projects. Reviewers embraced "Chernobyl" enthusiastically, applauding its bleak mood steeped in dread and the lingering sense of doom.

The Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture – Drama went to the World War I epic "1917," with director Sam Mendes also taking home a trophy. Joaquin Phoenix earned Best Actor honors for his portrayal in "Joker," while Renée Zellweger claimed Best Actress for embodying Judy Garland in the biopic "Judy." Quentin Tarantino's "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood" swept three awards: Best Screenplay, Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy, and Best Supporting Actor for Brad Pitt.

In the musical or comedy acting categories, Awkwafina, an actress of Asian American heritage, was named Best Actress for her role in "The Farewell." The British series "Fleabag" took Best Television Series – Musical or Comedy, while its star Phoebe Waller-Bridge picked up Best Actress in that category. On the drama side, HBO's "Succession" emerged victorious. Veteran performer Tom Hanks was presented with the honorary Cecil B. DeMille Award in recognition of his lifetime body of work.

Cameron Diaz welcomes her first child

News broke on January 3 that the 47-year-old American actress had given birth to her first baby. Diaz shared the announcement herself via Instagram, posting:

"So happy, blessed and grateful to begin this new decade by announcing the arrival of our daughter, Raddix Madden. She has already stolen our hearts and completed our little family. We are overflowing with love, and while we feel beyond blessed, we also want to safeguard her privacy. For that reason, we won't be sharing any photos or additional details beyond confirming she is absolutely adorable. Wishing everyone a wonderful New Year from the Maddens. With love, Cameron and Benji." — Cameron Diaz ©

A close friend of the star, speaking anonymously, offered further insight. According to this source, Diaz stepped away from acting back in 2014 in order to focus on starting a family, and for the following five years struggled to conceive. She reportedly registered at fertility clinics and consulted a string of specialists along the way. After natural attempts failed, she turned to IVF — though even that path required persistence. The actress endured hormone treatments, spent long hours hooked up to IV drips, and battled constant fatigue. Throughout this grueling journey, her 40-year-old husband, musician Benji Madden, stood firmly by her side. It's little wonder the couple was overjoyed when the pregnancy was finally confirmed!

Harry Potter: Is another chapter on the way?

Wizarding-world enthusiasts, rejoice! Reports suggest a new "Harry Potter" installment is moving forward. Considering the previous film adaptation hit theaters nearly a decade ago — and that J.K. Rowling had long insisted the story was finished — the rumor has sent fans into a frenzy. Word is that Rowling herself will pen the screenplay, with the narrative picking up roughly twenty years after the events of the original finale.

The storyline is expected to center on Albus Severus Potter, Harry and Ginny's youngest son, whose name honors two former Hogwarts headmasters. A fresh antagonist is also rumored to enter the fold — the offspring of Voldemort and his loyal Death Eater, Bellatrix Lestrange. Potterheads already met these characters in Rowling's stage play "Harry Potter and the Cursed Child." Insiders speculate the project could expand into a multi-film saga following Albus Severus, with several of the original beloved cast members reprising their iconic roles. Although Warner Bros. has yet to issue an official statement, whispers from inside the studio suggest a new "Harry Potter" film is already in early development.

Princess Diana's niece says "I do" to a 60-year-old tycoon

Twenty-nine-year-old British model Kitty Eleanor Spencer, the eldest daughter of Charles Spencer — Princess Diana's younger brother — recently made headlines after accepting a marriage proposal from her longtime boyfriend, 60-year-old South African businessman Michael Lewis. The fashion industry magnate is a full 32 years older than his bride-to-be (he'll celebrate his 61st birthday this January) and even five years her father's senior!

The tycoon, who made his fortune in the fashion world, popped the question on Christmas Eve during a getaway to Cape Town. Kitty wasted no time in sharing the joyful news with her mother and other family members, who reportedly hold Michael in high regard. Despite his considerable wealth, those close to him describe the entrepreneur as remarkably down-to-earth and unassuming. The pair were first photographed together in New York back in May 2018. For Kitty, this will be her first walk down the aisle, while for Lewis — the owner of the British clothing chain Whistles — it will be his second marriage.
