Gender Reveal Gifts: To Bring or Not to Bring?

by Amber Mamian

What’s the proper etiquette for gender reveal gifts? Since these parties are relatively new to the celebration scene, there’s plenty of confusion. Each host runs theirs a bit differently, leaving room for interpretation. A common question for both hosts and guests is whether gifts are appropriate. The deciding factor is whether the parents-to-be are also planning a baby shower. If so, you can likely skip a gift, since they expect presents at the shower rather than the reveal. But if you’d still like to bring something small, go ahead—you can never have too many baby items! Choosing a gift can be tricky without knowing the sex, and that’s where we come in. Just keep in mind that parents probably don’t want to regift or discard items, so stick to gender-neutral presents and save the frilly tutus or tiny sneakers for the shower. Here are some excellent gender reveal gift ideas.

Presents for the Mom-to-Be

  • Maternity Wear – Why not shower the mother with some love? Many expectant moms buy few maternity outfits and try to make do with their existing wardrobe. Target is a great starting point for basics, along with Buy Buy Baby and Old Navy. For a fashion-forward mama, BAE the Label and Pink Blush Maternity offer everything from dresses and kimonos to swimsuits, all designed to flatter the baby bump. If you’re unsure about sizing, simply grab a gift card from any maternity retailer and note in the card that you’d like her to spoil herself with new clothes.
  • Pampering for New Parents – Pregnancy can be stressful and uncomfortable. A cozy robe or a certificate for a prenatal massage will be greatly appreciated. A couples manicure-pedicure is another wonderful gender reveal gift that ensures both parents feel pampered.
  • Keepsakes for Mom and Dad – Since the pregnancy is still early, mugs or shirts for parents-to-be make playful gender reveal gifts. As you likely know, Etsy is the go-to place for these. Those Mom Life hats are absolutely adorable, as are the Mama shirts from RJC Custom Graphics. A bracelet like this is incredibly thoughtful and sweet. We adore these cute mugs—even if mom can’t drink coffee right now, fill one with delicious hot chocolate mix. For the dad-to-be, this shirt gives him the recognition he deserves.

Gifts for the Baby

  • Baby Care Essentials – Boy or girl, all infants require plenty of cleaning up. You can purchase ready-made kits (such as this one) or assemble your own. Include items like towels, washcloths, a thermometer, infant acetaminophen, nail clippers, and wipes. Fun additions include the Nosefrida, a hugely popular tool that’s a lifesaver for congested babies, and The Windy, which helps babies pass gas to relieve tummy discomfort.
  • Children’s Books – The parents-to-be will likely cherish books to read to their new little bundle of joy, and you can’t miss with classics or your own childhood favorites. The Giving Tree, Guess How Much I Love You, and Goodnight Moon are excellent options. Board books are also a smart pick since the baby can handle them independently.
Additional Gender Reveal Gift Ideas: Hostess Presents – If you prefer a simple gift, bringing a tray of cookies or brownies is always safe. You could also present blue or pink flowers—it’s fun to choose the color of the gender you’re guessing! Non-alcoholic wine is an option, or you can bring a regular bottle with a humorous label to be saved for after the baby arrives. Popular labels include “It’s a pump and dump kind of day,” “Naptime is my happy hour,” and “Save for first Mommy meltdown.” Just be sure the new mom isn’t already missing wine too much!
