The immigration framework the White House put forward yesterday fails to qualify as a credible plan for meaningful reform. On the contrary, it perpetuates the disgraceful immigration agenda this administration has championed since President Trump took office. It weaponizes DREAMers as bargaining chips in service of a xenophobic, anti-immigrant platform that will inflict serious and lasting harm on our families, our economy, and the country as a whole.
Lawmakers should dismiss the new Trump proposal outright and concentrate instead on a bipartisan remedy to the crisis the President manufactured through his cruel decision to terminate DACA, the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program. Every day that passes, more young immigrants lose their protected status, and hundreds of thousands of people are forced to live in terror of being torn from their loved ones and expelled from the only home they have ever known.
DREAMers were brought to the United States as children and deserve the right to live, study, work, and contribute to our communities and our economy. They make our country stronger.
The mothers of America grasp what President Trump and his nativist advisors clearly do not — that diversity, not the absence of it, is the foundation of our nation's strength and prosperity. DREAMers are not pieces to be sacrificed on the altar of a radical anti-immigrant crusade — and they should not have to wait one day longer for the stability and security they have earned. The White House framework is a slap in the face that betrays our country's core values. Congress must reject it.
