Essential Advice for Selecting the Perfect Concealer

Discover the key tips for picking the right concealer to hide imperfections, brighten under-eyes, and achieve a flawless complexion.

Essential Advice for Selecting the Perfect Concealer

If someone asked me which three products I'd keep in my makeup bag, my answer would be concealer, lip balm, and mascara. Truly, I consider concealer one of the most indispensable items in any cosmetic collection. Today, GoSeekNest shares the most crucial advice on how to select a concealer.

What concealer can do for you

  • Eliminate redness;
  • Mask signs of tiredness;
  • Perform simple facial contouring;
  • Fix a smudged eyeliner wing

A well-chosen concealer can accomplish all these tasks. On the flip side, a poor texture can emphasize under-eye bags or add years to your appearance.

Let's explore how concealer differs from foundation and why foundation isn't designed for these jobs. Concealer contains a richer color pigment, allowing it to provide more coverage. Some concealers can even hide tattoos! Its formula is better suited for the delicate skin around the eyes. Foundation, meanwhile, is made to even out overall skin tone. Concealer works on specific flaws in a targeted manner.

How to pick a concealer?

Concealers come in liquid, cream, or solid forms. Liquid textures are often ideal for the eye area, creams work well for the eye region and minor redness, and solid sticks are great for blemishes. However, today's manufacturers are making each texture more versatile, so choose what feels most comfortable for you. The finer the concealer's texture, the less visible it will be on the skin.

It's essential to consider your skin tone and foundation when selecting a concealer shade. Don't pick a shade several tones lighter unless you're aiming for Instagram-style makeup that only looks good in photos. Opt for a shade one tone lighter than your foundation, and you'll be safe.

Concealers can be yellow, pink, or peach. Yellow tones are excellent for hiding redness and inflammation. Pink shades suit olive-toned skin and effectively mask fatigue. Peach concealers do a superb job of correcting blue undertones.

If you have problematic skin, I suggest using two different concealers: a fine-textured one for under the eyes and a stick concealer with antibacterial ingredients to cover facial blemishes.

Regarding application order, I recommend applying foundation first, then concealer on top. This method creates the most invisible coverage. The technique for applying concealer under the eyes differs from that for blemishes.

How to apply concealer under the eyes

  • Use a brush to pick up a small amount of product and pat it into the inner corner of the eye. This area has the most visible blood vessels, causing a bluish tint.
  • Then, blend the remaining concealer in a triangular shape from the inner corner to the outer corner and down toward the nasal fold.
  • Ensure the outer corner doesn't have too much product, or it will settle into expression lines and make you look older.
  • After spreading the product, take a cotton swab and lightly roll away any excess.

How to apply concealer on blemishes

  • Pick up some texture with a brush and use a tapping motion to cover the blemish. Using a brush is crucial because finger warmth can melt the concealer, reducing its coverage power.
  • Once the redness is fully covered, blend the edges without touching the main area where concealer was applied.
  • If you use powder, apply it to the corrected areas with a gentle patting motion.

If you haven't tried this product yet, you definitely should!
