Samsung Introduces Exynos 7872: Hexa-Core Design with A73 Cores and Iris Scanner Support

Samsung has officially launched the Exynos 7872 chipset, which was previously seen in the Meizu M6s. This new processor belongs to the mid-range Exynos 5 series but incorporates several high-end features.

Manufactured using a 14nm process, it boasts a hexa-core CPU arranged in two clusters: 2x Cortex-A73 cores clocked at 2.0GHz and 4x Cortex-A53 cores running at 1.6GHz. Graphics performance is handled by a Mali-G71 GPU.

The chipset natively supports an Iris scanner, a feature typically found only in flagship devices. Additionally, the camera system can record 1080p video at 120fps and includes Smart Wide Dynamic Range technology.

However, this mid-range chip does come with certain limitations. It lacks 2160p video support and does not include dedicated hardware for dual-camera setups. The maximum display resolution is 1,920 x 1,200 pixels, which excludes compatibility with 18:9 FullHD+ screens.

On the connectivity front, the Exynos 7872 includes an LTE Cat. 7 2CA modem (downloading at up to 300Mbps and uploading at up to 150Mbps). It supports Wi-Fi 802.11n dual-band (but not ac) along with Bluetooth 5.0. The positioning system is robust, offering support for GPS, GLONASS, BeiDou, and Galileo. FM radio is also included.

Memory options are limited to LPDDR3 RAM, eMMC 5.1 internal storage, and SD 3.0 standard for expandable memory (i.e., UHS-I microSD cards). Notably, UFS storage is not supported.

Recently, Samsung unveiled the Galaxy A8 (2018) phones powered by the Exynos 7885—a comparable 14nm chip featuring a 4+4 processor configuration. That chip supports higher resolutions for taller aspect ratios, though the A8 still cannot record 2160p video.
