A 2016 University of Phoenix survey found that roughly two-thirds of American adults knew one of their social media profiles had been compromised by hackers. On top of that, most grown-ups deliberately restrict the personal details they put online.
Unfortunately, the attackers aren't going anywhere.
Even though public awareness around digital safety and confidentiality is clearly on the rise, attackers won't be slowed down. Their whole playbook is built around spotting weak spots in your defenses and cashing in on them. Staying one move ahead of them has to be a constant effort.
There's no reason to put off tightening your social media security any longer.
Why Bother Locking Down Your Social Media?
You're well aware that bad actors are circling online. With access to just one of your social profiles, they can unleash a surprising amount of havoc. Reuse the same password across sites (and that password has already been exposed in some breach dump), or fall for one sneaky phishing message, and you're caught — sometimes without even realizing it.
The University of Phoenix report uncovered plenty of insights. The ones that matter most for our purposes are these:
"About two out of three U.S. adults who maintain personal social media accounts report knowing their accounts were breached at some point, and 86% say they deliberately post less personal information out of worry that hackers might obtain it."
Despite this heightened awareness, a third of people using social platforms still don't realize when they've been compromised. And simply knowing there's a threat doesn't mean you've neutralized it. One moment of distraction, a hectic workday, a personal loss — the timing just has to be wrong once.
So let's make this a priority. Time to lock your social profiles down for the year ahead.
First Things First: Ditch the Unused Accounts!
No matter which platform you frequent, keeping track of which profiles you still use and which ones have been left to gather dust is essential. Abandoned or dormant profiles are far easier for criminals to take over than ones that see regular activity.
Put yourself in an attacker's shoes for a second: if you abandoned a social profile, what could a criminal dig up? Names of your contacts, your workplace, relatives — and obviously, your own details. Stuff like your date of birth, your neighborhood, your hobbies. Pictures of you alongside your friends.
Every person in your friends list can already see a slice of that same information. They may not have permission to pull up your full profile, but whatever they already know about you in real life could easily be referenced. You'll be tagged in their photos. They might share links where you're mentioned.
Put simply, it gives con artists a way to slip their hooks into you by masquerading as someone you trust online. Unless you actually phone them up or chat face-to-face, there's no reliable way to confirm whether a profile is still being run by the person you know.
So when a dormant account suddenly springs back to life, approach it with caution at first. Better still, remove that possibility entirely and just get rid of profiles you no longer use. What if you turn out to be mistaken? Then so what?
No big deal. Just re-connect with them after you've verified it's really them!
Once you've handled that, we can dive into the actual mechanics of social profile protection. We've highlighted the three biggest platforms below. Follow the instructions in each one to bulletproof your account.
