The actresses of Hollywood chose black attire, yet it was their striking makeup that commanded attention. Instead of color in their dresses, they embraced playful tones, glossy crimson lips, and metallic eyelids as the key accompaniments to their dark gowns.
Every makeup artist for the celebrities appeared to concur: since the dresses offered a neutral palette in terms of color, the cosmetics were meant to highlight each star's individual allure. For example, Mandy Moore sported a deep red lip paired with radiant skin and a tidy bun. Greta Gerwig’s edgy, metallic eye makeup complemented her eye-catching necklace. We interviewed the two artists who prepared these women using Charlotte Tilbury products. Below is their approach.
Mandy donned a stunning black dress from Rosie Assoulin, accented with a refined coral red belt. Celebrity makeup artist Matin envisioned a luminous, star-quality appearance, drawing inspiration from the women featured on 1980s Roxy Music album covers—featuring chiseled cheekbones, glowing skin, full lips, and sharply defined eyes.
The following steps detail how Matin achieved Mandy’s look:
SKIN:
- Mandy's complexion was first prepared using the Instant Magic Facial Dry Sheet Mask, designed to rapidly hydrate, illuminate, smooth, and balance the skin tone.
- Next, Matin applied Charlotte’s Magic Cream across Mandy's face, neck, shoulders, and arms, followed by the Brightening Youth Glow—a product that targets aging, corrects color, and enhances radiance.
FACE:
- He then used Hollywood Flawless Filter in shade 5 (set to debut in March 2018) on the cheekbones, as well as the highest points of the face, shoulders, and back. Taking cues from light manipulation and digital filters, this youth-enhancing serum produces an immediate 'filter' effect on the skin, delivering a red-carpet-ready, star-quality luminosity.
- Magic Foundation in shade 5 was subsequently applied to perfect her already flawless complexion, then Hollywood Contour Wand in Light/Medium added subtle sculpting and definition, while Filmstar Bronze and Glow in Light/Medium intensified the radiance.
- Cheek to Chic Blusher in Ecstasy was brushed onto the apples of Mandy's cheeks to give a gentle rosy tint. To finish, Matin dusted the whole face with Air Brush Flawless Finish in shade 2 to reduce any unwanted shine.
EYES:
- For defining and framing the eyes, Colour Chameleon in Golden Quartz was swept across the entire eyelid, then topped with the captivating Luxury Palette in The Dolce Vita. Finally, Full Fat Lashes in Glossy Black was used to create exceptionally lush lashes.
LIPS:
- To complete the ensemble, the limited-edition Hollywood Lips Matte Liquid Lipstick in Walk of Fame was applied, giving a bold orange-red statement pout.
Celebrity makeup artist Jenn Streicher explained, 'Greta wore an Oscar de la Renta gown that reinterpreted Old Hollywood glamour, yet she desired a makeup style that was contemporary rather than classic. Our goal was to make her eyes shine.'
Here, Streicher outlines the process for Greta’s makeup:
SKIN:
- First, Streicher used Caudalíe Premier Cru Eye Cream and Premier Cru Cream on parts of the face requiring extra hydration.
FACE:
- To achieve a flawlessly smooth and luminous foundation, Streicher started by applying the Brightening Youth Glow 'glow booster' as a primer across the entire face, then covered it with Magic Foundation.
- She then layered Hollywood Flawless Filter (debuting March 2018) over the foundation to emphasize the cheekbones, décolleté, and cleavage.
- Next, Hollywood Contour Wand in Light/Medium was employed to contour and provide gentle definition, after which she lightly dusted Bar of Gold across the upper cheekbones and the inner corners of the eyes.
- Air Brush Flawless Finish in shade 2 Medium was then applied, and the look was sealed with several sprays of Caudalíe’s Beauty Elixir.
EYES:
- For a modern take on the traditional smoky eye, Rock 'N' Kohl Eyeliner in Bedroom Black was drawn along the upper lash line to establish a sultry, smudged foundation.
- Streicher then utilized the Luxury Palette in The Rock Chick. She moistened the brush and applied the silvery-grey 'enhance' shade along with the black 'smoke' shade onto the eyelids.
- The silver 'prime' shade was then placed in the inner corners and beneath the lower lashes for illumination, while the gunmetal 'enhance' shade was blended into the creases.
- To complete the eyes, Streicher coated both upper and lower lashes with Full Fat Lashes in Glossy Black, and defined the brows using Legendary Brows in Super Model.
LIPS:
- Hot Lips Lipstick in Super Cindy was spread across the entire lips to achieve a plumper appearance, after which Lip Cheat in Pillow Talk was used to outline and refine the lip shape.
