Everything changed on February 5, when San Francisco locals spotted director Lana Wachowski — who previously helmed the original trilogy alongside her sister — on local streets. Production gear was set up throughout one neighborhood, yet the leading actor was nowhere to be seen.

Bystanders, however, managed to snap shots of Keanu Reeves — the actor behind Neo in the original three films. Any lingering doubt evaporated — a fresh Matrix chapter was indeed being shot in the city! Since that moment, the internet has been inundated with images and clips captured at the filming site.

In the captured frames, the star is dressed in denim jeans, a jacket, and a dark hat. His familiar beard is intact, hinting that the storyline may unfold within the simulated matrix, where his protagonist goes by the name Thomas Anderson.

Locals in San Francisco are reportedly starstruck and barely contain their excitement upon spotting their hero wandering through Chinatown, sipping coffee, enjoying a smoke, chatting with the director, and posing for photos with admirers during breaks.

Naturally, the franchise wouldn't be complete without its hero soaring above the urban skyline. However, Neo appears to no longer fly solo — enthusiasts speculate that Trinity, who perished at the conclusion of the third installment, can be glimpsed hovering beside him in the footage.

More recently, on February 9, freshly captured images and clips reveal nighttime filming unfolding atop a high-rise in San Francisco's Financial District. Drones along with a dedicated filming helicopter circle overhead throughout the sequence.

Cast lineup and theatrical premiere
Keanu Reeves agreed to reprise his role in the fourth Matrix chapter once Lana Wachowski confirmed she would direct. Shortly afterward, word broke that Carrie-Anne Moss would also return as Trinity. The prevailing theory suggests both protagonists remained tethered to the matrix, which explains their survival. Incidentally, Moss herself was also spotted on the production lot.

As for Morpheus, Laurence Fishburne's involvement remains unverified at this stage. However, it has emerged that a younger version of the character will be portrayed by Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, recognized by viewers from titles including Aquaman, Black Mirror, Us, and The Handmaid's Tale.

One character audiences definitely won't encounter in this sequel is Agent Smith, originally brought to life by Hugo Weaving. The British performer was actively discussing a potential return with Lana Wachowski, but his commitment to the stage production "The Visit" — adapted from Friedrich Dürrenmatt's play at the Royal National Theatre — ultimately made participation impossible.

That said, the film won't be entirely devoid of antagonists. Lambert Wilson, the French actor, is set to reprise his role as the Merovingian in the fourth installment. Meanwhile, discussions also took place with Priyanka Chopra and Jada Pinkett Smith regarding potential involvement. The latter previously portrayed Captain Niobe across the second and third chapters of the trilogy.

The specific character Neil Patrick Harris will portray in Matrix 4 remains undetermined, though he appears on the confirmed cast list. Warner Bros. has additionally been on the lookout for an actor to depict a younger Thomas Anderson — someone still unaware of his destiny as the chosen one. Sequences featuring a youthful Neo could potentially be presented as flashback vignettes.
Chad Stahelski, stunt coordinator and director
Stunt coordinator and filmmaker Chad Stahelski has confirmed his return to the production. Throughout the original Matrix trilogy, his physical resemblance to Reeves allowed him to double for the actor during hazardous sequences, and he subsequently directed Reeves across the John Wick trilogy. There's also speculation that this latest Matrix chapter could launch yet another trilogy — though whether parts five and six will materialize, and who might appear in them, remains uncertain.
