When visionary Nike designer Tinker Hatfield unveiled the brand's groundbreaking air cushioning technology back in 1987, he set the stage for what would become a cultural phenomenon. The Air Max line has since attracted an impassioned fanbase spanning dedicated sneaker collectors, professional athletes, chart-topping musicians, and—more recently—the fashion industry's most influential tastemakers. Pop star Rita Ora has been photographed in them both during concerts and on the street, while Beyoncé famously chose a Liquid Gold pair for one of her appearances. Front-row attendees at Fashion Week rely on the shoe to keep them comfortable between runway shows, and minimalist designer Phoebe Philo has been seen styling them with pared-back ensembles. With its plush cushioning, forward-thinking engineering, and undeniable cool factor, the Air Max has secured its place as a cornerstone of streetwear. March marks the annual celebration of Air Max, and in honor of the occasion, we're revisiting some of the most influential models in the sneaker's storied history.
1987: Air Max 1 The model that launched a legacy.
