The reality about soup is far different from what our mothers and grandmothers taught us. Today, GoSeekNest examines the true advantages and drawbacks of consuming soup.
FALSE BELIEF: Skipping soup will cause your stomach to "shut down"
REALITY: A person can remain perfectly healthy even after cutting soup out of their diet entirely. The reasoning lies in how liquid dishes are typically prepared—using vegetables and water. Vegetables provide fiber, which supports healthy gut bacteria and helps eliminate metabolic waste (though fresh vegetables contain more fiber than cooked ones). Water acts as a catalyst, moving food through the digestive tract more efficiently and enhancing the absorption of vitamins and minerals from vegetables. Given this, you could easily replace soup by eating your daily vegetable quota alongside a side dish and drinking enough water throughout the day.
However, it's also true that warm liquid dishes stimulate digestion and prepare the stomach for heavier foods like meat, fish, and grains.
FALSE BELIEF: Broth is always healthy
REALITY: Most soups are made with meat broth—often high in fat—which can harm the body and put extra strain on digestion. In such cases, any benefits from the vegetables are effectively canceled out. If you do want to prepare a broth-based dish, opt for lean meats such as chicken, turkey, or quail. Bring the water to a boil twice, discarding it each time, and only on the third boil will you have a truly healthy product.
But note: this applies only to meat-based broth. When vegetables are cooked, their vitamins and minerals leach into the cooking water. Eating just the boiled vegetables and discarding the liquid is like brewing tea, eating the bag, and pouring out the drink—all the goodness stays in the water!

FALSE BELIEF: Cream soup is a diet food
REALITY: Restaurants often prepare cream soups using semolina, processed cheese, potatoes, starch, and white flour—ingredients that offer little nutritional value. Furthermore, if you're following a strict diet, these heavy ingredients can disrupt your body's regulated processes. If you love cream soups, it's better to make them at home with natural yogurt instead.
That said, these soups do make your diet more satisfying. They provide essential nutrients and help you manage hunger more easily. So if you're out and feeling hungry, having soup is fine—just choose a vegetable broth rather than a mushroom cream soup 🙂
