How astronauts prepare meals in orbit: red rice and turmeric chicken

European Space Agency astronaut Samantha Cristoforetti is currently residing on the International Space Station as part of her extended expedition, Futura. In the weightless environment, food carries significant importance, particularly for mental well-being. That is why crew members receive a personal allowance of what is termed "bonus food"—items they personally select to evoke the flavors of home. We invited Samantha to demonstrate how she prepares one of her chosen bonus dishes in microgravity: whole red rice accompanied by peas and chicken seasoned with turmeric.
