On Monday, May 4, Canadian singer Claire Boucher—better known by her stage name Grimes—delivered a baby boy to 48-year-old SpaceX founder Elon Musk. The newborn is Musk's sixth child and the first for his 32-year-old partner. Grimes first hinted at her pregnancy in January when she posted a photo showing a noticeable baby bump on Instagram, but official confirmation didn't arrive until March 6. The billionaire entrepreneur quickly shared an image of the infant, whom the couple named with the puzzling moniker X Æ A-12.

As the public puzzled over the pronunciation and reasoning behind such an unusual name, the new mother offered an explanation. According to Grimes, X represents an unknown variable, Æ is the elven spelling of Ai, meaning both love and artificial intelligence. A-12 refers to a CIA reconnaissance aircraft, the predecessor of the SR-17—a plane that excels in battle but carries no weapons or armor, relying solely on speed. Additionally, the letter A stands for Archangel, which is Grimes's favorite song, and the number 12 corresponds to the 12th zodiac sign, the Rat (2020 being the Year of the White Metal Rat).
