A study published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that women who consumed foods high in sugar were more prone to depression compared to those who didn't. This is because sugar can cause chronic inflammation in the body, impacting brain function. Fluctuations in blood sugar levels also result in similar mood swings.

Your physical condition will improve. According to research from the Harvard School of Public Health, the average person consumes about 22 teaspoons of added sugar each day. This sugar is not only found in cakes or candies but also in less obvious items like sauces, marinades, and processed meats. By carefully reviewing your daily diet, you can easily cut out 300-400 extra calories.

You will have more energy. Added sugar consists of simple carbohydrates. These are quickly absorbed, giving the body a rapid energy boost. However, this effect is short-lived, and soon you'll want another dose. "When you eat foods rich in protein and healthy fats, such as a handful of almonds, they provide a more consistent and longer-lasting energy supply," explains Diana Sanfilippo, a nutrition consultant.

What Happens When You Quit Sugar

Your skin will stay youthful. A high-sugar diet can reduce skin elasticity and cause premature wrinkles. Fortunately, scientific studies indicate that lower sugar consumption can help prevent early skin aging.

Strategies to reduce sugar intake

Stay away from artificial sweeteners. When you decide to cut sugar, your brain will still crave something sweet, and artificial sweeteners can actually intensify that craving.

Check food labels. The best way to avoid excessive sugar is to thoroughly read labels and ingredient lists.

Prepare meals at home. Cooking your own food allows you to control the ingredients you use.

Organize your kitchen. If you're committed to a sugar-free life, remove all sugar sources from your home. This is a key rule because it eliminates unnecessary temptations.

Of course, it's important to recognize that completely eliminating sugar is impossible—it's a substance found in many healthy foods that your body needs. However, sugar should be consumed in moderation and in its natural form.
